Event description

Practice your close-up photography skills with some of the most colourful subjects nature has to offer!

The Bribie Island Butterfly House has up 1,000 butterflies or more for you to photograph on any given day. At this three hour  workshop you will learn about focus techniques and camera settings ideal for shooting close up subjects.

Note that we said 'close-up' and not 'macro' although you are welcome to bring along your macro gear if you prefer. Butterflies can be shot just as well with a good telephoto lens from further away. So even if you don't have a macro lens - you're good to go!

The workshop begins with a brief theory session, to discuss camera settings and focus options suited to the butterfly experience. Your teacher can show you how to find those functions on your camera if you need help. Then we head into the butterfly house for the rest of the afternoon. On a sunny day the light improves as the day goes on, so your best photos may come at the end of the workshop.

When the butterfly house closes at 4pm, you might choose to head over to Banksia Beach, to photograph birds and end the day with a sunset over Pumicestone Passage - a great way to finish your Bribie Island experience!

What you need to bring:

  • Camera: DSLR or Mirrorless, all brands welcome
  • Lenses: Macro and/or telephoto lenses suitable for close quarters shooting
  • Make sure your battery is fully charged, bring a spare if you have one
  • Make sure you have lots of space on your SD/memory card. Expect to take hundreds of photos!
  • Hat, sunscreen, comfortable shoes - you will be on your feet the whole afternoon.
  • There are toilets at the location, and you can purchase cold water and coffee. Bring other refreshments if you need.
