Event description
THIRD RUN CINEMA is an intermittent screening series curated by Hannah de Feyter. It prioritises programming experimental, arthouse and classic world films that are otherwise unavailable to view or stream (legally) in Australia, and screening them in a cozy, accessible & social context.
For our third season in collaboration with the wonderful Elsie’s Film House, we are screening several incredible classics from Central Asia + the Caucasus.

BY THE BLUEST OF SEAS / У самого синего моря
(1936) dir. Boris Barnet
69 minutes, Unclassified 15+
Russian with English subtitles
Two shipwrecked sailors are rescued by the members of a collective farm, where they promptly fall in love with the same woman. This movie includes: sea shanties! a frankly very homoerotic and polyamorous vibe! communist propaganda! one of the most poetic depictions of the sea in cinematic history! This film is warm & silly & charming with sudden, dazzling bursts of gorgeous imagery -- the way that light glinting off a wave might suddenly make you catch your breath on an otherwise warm and peaceful day at the beach.
