MAPBM Presents Sound Artists Chris Caines and Gail Priest

Chris Caines
Chris will be presenting a new live audiovisual project called Logue, a visual music piece composed from audiovisual field recordings collected over a ten-year period across Europe, Australia, the US and Asia. These fragments are composed into arcs of abstract and interpolated memory using the rhythms inherent in the audio signatures of place and the textures of images collected while in motion.

Chris Caines is an artist living on the land of the Dharug and Gundugurra peoples in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, Australia. Producing films, articles, book chapters, site-specific media installation and mobile/locative media alongside regular music releases and performances. Caines’s studio practice embraces the linkages between media and location across multiple modalities in video, sound, live performance and network media. For three decades he has pursued and developed a sustained meditation on media as live archive to be continually re-composed as a way of revealing new knowledge about the constructions of history, embodied place and the ephemeral nature of our understandings of the past.

For this performance, Gail will draw on recent research at the MESS, exploring ideas around parts and wholes, fields and backgrounds. www.gailpriest.net.

Gail Priest is an artist living on Dharug and Gundungurra land (Katoomba, NSW). Gail has been performing and exhibiting nationally and internationally for over 20 years, with releases on her own label, Metal Bitch, as well as other labels including Flaming Pines, Endgame Records and room40. Her live exploratory music uses voice, micro sounds of objects, field recordings, and electronics as feeds into a system of transformation. Organic sounds become synthetic, synthetic sounds seem organic, beats and cycles emerge and disintegrate in a push and pull between the figurative and the abstract, the sensual and brutal .

These performances are presented by Modern Art Projects Blue Mountains as part of the Aerie exhibition at Wentworth Falls School of Arts.
