Calendar Girls Reunion

Event description

23 years ago, the ladies of South Arm’s Calverton Hall Committee found themselves in a dilemma: the hall desperately needed new curtains but there was no money in the kitty to buy them. Committee member Dot Kelly, inspired by the 1998 UK Womens’ Institute Calendar, suggested a surprising solution - that they should create their own nude calendar with the mature aged ladies of the Hall Committee. Dot’s daughter Anne volunteered to do the photography, all that was needed was the committee’s agreement. Treasurer Noella Foxcroft advised a yes vote (they needed the money) but thought they’d hardly sell any. Her exact words: “who’d want to buy a calendar of old chooks in the buff? I just hope I’m proved wrong”. Turns out she was.

Once released, the nude calendar provoked a media sensation, including coverage from British, German and Australian television programs. The original goal of $1,000 was achieved in the first month; before long, the committee had racked up more than $100,000 from the calendar.

Today there are just three of the original calendar girls surviving, but they have a great story to tell. We will have the chance to hear about this incredible tale from the participants themselves: Noella Foxcroft and Anne Kelly, who photographed the calendar, and one more mystery guest, currently being confirmed.

This fun night will be hosted by the legendary Rhys Muldoon, who is a South Arm local.

Rhys Muldoon is an award-winning Australian actor, writer and director who has worked in film, television, theatre and radio. Rhys is currently filming the latest season of House Husbands, and is a well-known face across Australian film, theatre and TV with credits such as The Sapphires, Tony Blair in Stuff Happens, Rake, Jack Irish, Valentines Day, Secret Life Of Us and Tot Mom.

Doors will open at 5.30pm for a 6pm start. There will be a bar with drinks available to purchase; you are welcome to BYO snacks and platters. This event is presented and funded by Clarence City Council to support the South Arm Winter Festival.
