Event description

SUNDAY 18 MAY 2025 FIRE FEAST LUNCH 11AM-3PM   LANDON BANNISTER President of Dark Sky Tasmania will speak on  CANDLELIGHT AND DARK SKIES  Access to clear starlit skies is inhibited due to light pollution for over 80% of the world’s population in urban areas. Consequently, what was once primarily a scientific concern has increasingly resonated with a broader public. The yearning to reconnect with nature and the cosmos has stimulated a demand for ‘dark sky experiences’ in locations blessed with naturally dark night skies such as at Rathmore in the Central Highlands of Tasmania, with our clear starlit skies, uninhibited with light pollution.

The humble candle, once an important provider of illumination to our evenings, has today become a symbol for romance and, at times, a reminder of our heavy reliance on electricity. However, the history of the candle holds some key learnings about our relationship to light as humans. It can also teach us a lot about our relationship to our nocturnal environment. This talk is designed to get you thinking about your relationship to light, the impacts this can have on the environment and our health, and how the power of a candle might help us achieve a brighter future. Experience Rathmore lamb fire feast with beautiful local wines and conversations around the braziers, with Landon Bannister  on “PSYCHOLOGY OF CANDLELIGHT AND TASMANIA’S GOAL OF PRESERVING AND PROTECTING TASMANIA’S NIGHT SKY.”

Spend a few nights at Rathmore Off Season to get into the highlands winter spirit and enjoy our night skies staying in our beautiful elegant heritage or rusic chic accommodation. Enquire about the Feast Stay Escape for 17-19 MAY WITH ACCOMMODATION in Rustic Chic or Elegant heritage Rathmore accommodation from $770 including accommodation, breakfasts and Sunday Fire Feast Lunch for 2.
