Calthorpes' House Tours
Event description
Step into the story of the Calthorpe family and their life in the new capital city of Canberra. The Calthorpes moved into their new home in 1927. Designed by the architects Oakley and Parkes (who also designed the Prime Minister’s residence, The Lodge), the house includes the original furnishings purchased by Mrs Calthorpe and the family’s belongings – the pianola and music, books, receipts, clothes, appliances, photographs and ornaments. This rare and intact domestic collection reflects the tastes and social history of Canberra life in the mid-twentieth century.
Please note due to current ACT Health advice, tours are limited to 6 people. Â
Calthorpes House will be closed due to garden conservation works on Saturday 20 August.
