Canberra Poetry Slam Ft. Lucia De Luca (Canada!)

All the way from Montreal, Canada - Lucia De Luca !! <3 :O

As an English teacher and spoken word poet, Lucia (Lu-CHEE-a) De Luca plays with stories in the classroom and at the mic. She is a community and self-taught narrative poet whose work cradles tales of her past self, family, Italian heritage, chronic illness, and love. Lucia is a recipient of the 2022 QWF Spoken Word Prize, a two-time Canadian Individual Poetry Slam finalist, and a member of the 2023 Throw Poetry Collective slam team. In June 2023, she performed at the 1st Accenti Magazine International Festival of the Arts in Italy.

For those new to our community, a slam looks like …

🎤 A round of open mic performances.

🎤 Judges, randomly selected from the audience and a winner announced at the end of the night.

🎤 A feature poet set from a nationally recognised performer.

Canberra Slam is a safe space.

All are welcomed and encouraged to share their stories, no matter what race, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious belief or diversity in experience.

We emphasise ALL are welcomed and encouraged to share their stories - naturally, there's always potential for tension.

We are a community, made up of a complex mix of humans from all walks of life, together, we can do our best to navigate this complexity safely as a community.

🎤 When do performances begin?

Doors open at 6:30pm, bring some friends, find a seat, get a drink or sign up to perform. Performances will start at 7:00pm sharp.

Feature poets usually on around 8:30pm.

🎤 What is a slam performance?

Our slam doesn't have many rules, it's a framework to share what you think and feel with artistic expression. 
Performances often take diverse forms, resembling poems, spoken word, just don't be up there longer than 3 minutes, or you'll be taking time from other performers.

🎤 How do I sign up to perform?

You can sign up when you buy a ticket, selecting the Open Mic ticket option, OR if you muster up the courage later, ask the door person if there's space on the list!

🎤 Is there an entry fee?

We have a tiered ticketing system ranging for $10 - $30 – your ticket price pays the feature artist an industry standard award wage. What's left over will go towards cover ground costs and booking bigger events.

🎤 What if I can't afford the entry fee?
