Join the Canberra Sinfonia for one of the highlights of the repertoire, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater.

The event will feature a star-studded cast of local professionals, with Baroque soprano Greta Claringbould and counter-tenor Tobias Cole. The orchestra will be led by guest concertmaster and early music specialist John Ma.

Well-known to Canberra audiences, Cole is one of the country’s leading vocalists and foremost early musicians. He has performed throughout Australia, the UK and USA as a counter-tenor and is a Distinguished Artist in Residence at the Australian National University.

Greta Claringbould is a Canberra-based Baroque specialist, with an extensive specialist repertoire in baroque oratorio and cantata. She is the Principal Soprano of Adhoc Baroque, and a Principal Soprano Soloist with Canberra Bach Ensemble.

John Ma is a Violinist/Violist and Viola d’amore player specialising in Early Music. He has performed with groups around the world including Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Bach Collegium Japan, Helsinki Baroque Orchestra and Trondheim Baroque Orchestra. In Australia, Ma has appeared with Pinchgut Opera, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Australian Haydn Ensemble, and many others.

The Stabat Mater is one of Pergolesi’s last works and also one of his most sacred. The music is written to a 13th-century Christian text as a hymn to Mary, portraying her suffering as Christ’s mother during his crucifixion.

Perfect for anyone who loves Bach or Vivaldi, or equally for anyone who would like to enjoy an hour of calm reflection in the middle of a busy weekend. We look forward to welcoming you to an amazing performance!
