Undertaking a PhD in cancer can be such an exciting time- yet it can also be daunting and overwhelming!
Maridulu Budyari Gumal, the Sydney Partnerships for Health, Education, Research and Enterprise (SPHERE) Cancer CAG is excited to bring together a series of workshops to holistically support PhD candidates (with a research focus on cancer) in resilience and wellbeing.

We encourage you to attend both workshops to maximise the benefits and practical application of learnings you will receive. However, you may select the one that resonates with your needs the most.

Online Workshop # 1 Workshop - Seven Secrets of Highly Successful Research Students

This workshop describes the key habits required to successfully complete a PhD based on research and experience with thousands of students. Just as importantly, how these habits can greatly reduce stress and increase pleasure along the journey of completion. Some key areas that will be explored are:

• How you deal with your supervisor

• How you structure your study time

• Your attitude in relation to your research

• Dealing with writer’s block or having difficulty writing

• Getting the help, you need when you are stuck

• Juggling multiple commitments and never having enough time

• Keeping on going when the going gets tough

Online Workshop # 2 Workshop – Staying Well During Your PhD

Undertaking a PhD is both an exciting and challenging experience. It can be an emotional roller-coaster. The excitement of working on something you care about, exploring new ideas and contributing to knowledge can often be lost when challenges of feeling isolated and overwhelmed, uncertainty, conflict, and loss of motivation arise. This workshop draws on evidence-based strategies to help YOU stay well during your PhD. Some key areas that will be explored are:

• Managing the workload

• Resilience building

• Learning how to switch off

• Dealing with worries about setbacks and progress

• Good habits e.g., exercise, sleep, routines

• Dealing with isolation, lack of structure and loss of motivation

• Procrastination, perfectionism, and over-committing

• Support for more serious mental health issues

• Supporting friends/colleagues who may be struggling
