Candid Conversations - TSI Women Making History

For the first time in history, an unprecedented number of First Nations women in the Torres Strait Islands have nominated to run for the Queensland Local Government Elections on 16 March 2024.

In the remote region of the Torres Strait Islands, Mayoral Candidate Elsie Seriat OAM, contesting in the Torres Shire Council (TSC) and Regina Turner, Mayoral Candidate for the Torres Strait Islands Regional Council (TSIRC) have nominated in the 2024 QLD Local Government Elections. With Pauline Ahwang, candidate for the Torres Shire Council, these inspiring leaders are part of a cohort of 14 Zenadth Kes women running for office.

After attending a Political Candidate Training workshops run by Politics in Colour, these inspired women went ahead and formed their own women's alliance, devised strategic campaigns and committed to support each other along their journey into politics.

With sponsorship from the Australian Government, Torres Strait Regional Authority, Women for Election and Australian Rural Leadership Foundation, the get elected workshops for First Nations women has been a game changer.

Join us for this historical Candid Conversation where we talk to:

    • Regina Turner, Mayoral Candidate for Torres Strait Islands Regional Council

    • Elsie Seriat OAM, Mayoral Candidate for Torres Shire Council

    • Pauline Ahwang, Candidate for Torres Shire Council
