Why We’re Doing It
This journey started for me over 40 years ago, when I was just seven years old and rescued my first dog, Athena, from North Shore Animal League.
She was a four-year-old abused and neglected German Shepherd who had just given birth to puppies on the street. With a permanently broken leg and serious fear-based aggression, her behavior was completely understandable. At that age, I didn’t have much—but I knew I wanted to help her.
With compassion and care, I was able to earn her trust, navigate her behavior, and help her rehabilitate into a truly great dog. That experience shaped the entire path I’ve followed since.
Throughout my life, I’ve worked with dogs at every level—training, rescuing, and supporting shelters wherever I could. But the same challenge always comes up: the need is too great to manage one dog at a time. One-on-one help just isn’t enough.
That’s why we’re launching the Canines & Coffee: Rescue & Shelter Network.
This is about building a better education and networking system—so rescues and shelters are empowered to handle more cases with structure, fulfillment, and confidence.
We know resources are limited across the board—but we believe the strength lies in community.
When like-minded people come together to share ideas, support one another, and leave the politics out of it, we can give more dogs a real chance at success—and build something better than what any of us can do alone.
