Canterbury Tech hosts a day of inspiring speakers and events exploring the amazing work happening in Canterbury about preparing and developing the future of Business at the Tech Week Hub at EPIC centre.

When: Thursday 18 May 2023

A facilitated discussion between employers and training providers. Exploring workforce challenges and emerging training needs for the Canterbury area.

Canterbury Tech and Canterbury Regional Skills Leadership are partnering to deliver this tech week forum. The breakfast event will provide the opportunity for a regional discussion that is intended to support training providers in gaining insights into the specific needs of Canterbury Tech tech employers. The event also provides a platform to discuss the challenges and opportunities faced by training providers.

Main Day schedule starts here

9.30am – 11.30am: Discover. Design. Connect. Transform.

Global changes, local market conditions, and tech trends are driving digital change within business. Come along to this interactive workshop for a ‘look under the hood’ of a digital transformation project – where, working with industry experts from Deloitte, you’ll experience first-hand the tasks carried out by Business Analysts, Project Managers, Architects, and Product Owners. Leave the experience with a fresh understanding and insights into what it takes to deliver digital transformation in businesses today.

This will be fast-paced and fun, with attendees able to spend a ‘day in the life of’ several tech roles each with their own distinctive tasks and outputs, allowing attendees to see how their ‘role’ contributes to the project as it progresses.

Speaker Bio:

Lisa Donning is a Senior Consultant in the Deloitte Consulting team. She is an experienced Senior Business Analyst and certified Salesforce Administrator. Having supported a variety of clients, ranging from small businesses to large corporate and government agencies, she has proven experience combining requirements gathering and process mapping expertise with business acumen to advise on the selection and adoption of technology solutions.

12.00pm – 1.00pm: Demystifying Digital, AI, Block chain and Quantum computing for business

Learn what all the fuss is about, understand the basics and find out if you should know more. We are all being told that Digital thinking, ChatGPT, Robots and Quantum thingys are going to change the world, it’s on every media and every channel at the moment, but it always seems like crazy talk. Doug will try to simplify the big concepts you need to know from the future of Digital possibilities.

Speaker Bio:

Doug Talbot is a partner and founder of The Adjacent consultants, an editor at InfoQ.com, and has led technology for many organisations around the world. In the 40 years since Doug wrote his first computer programme he has followed the fast pace of technology change and helped many others to make sense of the confusing world he is native to.


1.00pm – 2.00pm: Taking Kiwi Tech to the World

MC: James Brown, Director, Newfound Global

A business connector focused on helping New Zealand build innovative technology products and solutions to export to a global market, by working with government, regulators and the wider technology sector.

A global CEO with a wealth of experience in scaling startups all over the world, a business mentor and just all round good egg.

2.00pm - 3.00 pm: Silicon Valley & NZ, an untapped opportunity

Brendon Muschamp got a job with a startup in Silicon Valley. This is a walkthrough of how you can do it, some of the barriers you should be aware of, and how they can be navigated.

Speaker Bio:

Brendo joins startups when they have signs of product-market fit. His job is to rebuild the initial prototypes so the company can scale. He's a Principal Software Engineer for Loom and is currently focused on their Desktop recorder.

Activating creativity and innovation through edu-tech!

Bring your whānau down to EPIC for an afternoon of creativity and innovation. There will be activation stations to explore with robotics, coding, digital design and computer science unplugged all on offer!

This is a family friendly FREE event brought to you by the team at Digital Future and Code Club Aotearoa. We would love parents and guardians to participate and learn alongside tamariki (age guide is 7-13 ish).

There will be an opportunity to hear about ākonga and volunteering pathways within the Waitaha Canterbury region with Code Club.
