"Metaverse Hong Kong" Seminar
Topic: How Can Speaking Cantonese Help Children Grow?
Speaker: Dr. Anita Wong (Associate Professor, University of Sydney)
Date: Saturday, February 8
Time: AEDT (Sydney) 3:15–5:00 PM
Venue: Room 201, Parramatta Library, PHIVE, 5 Parramatta Square, Parramatta, NSW 2150
Audience: Parents, grandparents, and elders of children aged 6 or below
Language: Cantonese
Free Admission, but tickets must be reserved in advance.

Many parents who have moved from Hong Kong to Australia find that their children often stop wanting to speak Cantonese as they grow older. Speech therapist Dr. Anita Wong will analyse the reasons behind this phenomenon and teach parents and grandparents how to use Cantonese effectively with their children to Change the situation.

Children growing up in an English-speaking environment tend to learn and become accustomed to expressing their thoughts, emotions, and social interactions in English. However, if a child's mother tongue is Cantonese, conversations within the family often remain limited to functional topics and rarely involve expressions of thoughts, feelings, or relationship-building. As a result, Cantonese may play an increasingly insignificant role in their development. Family members who cannot converse in English may also find it challenging to communicate with the child.

Dr. Anita Wong will share techniques for talking to and responding to children, aiming to help them continue learning and using Cantonese as their mother tongue. Participants will engage in role-playing activities and practice using toys, board games, and picture books to communicate with children in Cantonese. This will help children learn new vocabulary, develop storytelling skills, stimulate thinking, and build relationships. Dr. Wong will also explain language disorders and support strategies for addressing them.

About Dr. Anita Wong:

Dr. Wong is an Associate Professor at the University of Sydney and a certified speech-language pathologist with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Before her academic career at the University of Hong Kong from 2000 to 2022, she provided speech and language assessment and therapy to children from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds in the U.S. and Canada.
