Care Leavers in Aged Care: Building Safer, Trauma-Informed Services

30 minute webinar + 15 minutes Q&A for CHSP leaders, staff and volunteers

This webinar, presented by Wattle Place, will discuss Care Leavers, one of the “diverse populations” listed in the Aged Care Diversity Framework. “Care Leavers” is an overarching term for people who spent time, as children, in children’s homes, orphanages, other such institutions or foster homes before 1990.

Sadly, many of them experienced severe, widespread, systematic abuse in these environments, leading to complex trauma throughout their lives. Many Care Leavers are now ageing and require support. However, requiring support means being dependent on others and vulnerable again, like when they were children. Understandably, they have many fears about aged care, directly because of the trauma from their childhoods.

This webinar will help you to:

Understand the history of Care Leavers and why they live with trauma
Understand how that trauma may be activated through receiving aged care support and examples of what that activation may look like
Apply some alternative approaches to help Care Leavers feel as safe as possible while receiving aged care support (which will also assist aged care staff)
