Event description

SIMA | Sydney Int'l Women's Jazz Fest

Caroline Davis' Alula (USA) + NuovoMondo Symphonies (IT)

International boundary-pushing music for some serious listening – artists from the United States and Italy share the stage to reflect on the struggles of our world, and adventure to another.

Recognised by Downbeat’s Critic’s Poll as a Rising Star, American saxophonist Caroline Davis’ (USA) persona is unique to all her projects - from angular instrumental outfits to soulful song writing.

Jazz and creative musicians have always been present, creating artistic works that protest injustices and speak truths.

Her latest album ‘Alula’ stands on the shoulders of pioneering musical activists, providing creative reflection on the injustices present in the system of incarceration in America. It highlights the strength of those who have been, and those who are still incarcerated.

Debora Petrina and Giovanni Mancuso (Italy) present their innovative combination of live music and film.

"What a fresh sounding landscape full of gems" - Terry Riley

On stage Mancuso plays piano with multiple small instruments (toy piano, percussion, synthesiser), and Petrina plays piano and sings in unknown languages, while simultaneously running an original film in the background.

Journey with them to another world through their collage of 1930’s silent films, anonymous Super 8 home movies from the 1950s and 60s, and expedition documentaries.
