South of Binbee
Event description
Twelve months ago, Coedie McAvoy of the Wangan and Jagalingou invited over 120 people to his Homelands in Central Queensland for the Tour de Carmichael bike ride.
There we were confronted with the huge assault on Coedie’s stewardship over this iconic Country – ecosystem destruction, resource exploitation, climate change and the many other dreadful impacts of continuing colonialism.
With the guidance of these traditional owners, and in the regenerative atmosphere of Camp Binbee, we were able to reflect on our response to these assaults, and how we might support them.
At the South of Binbee gathering we invite you to do likewise as we hear First Nation thinking on Relationality, Reoccupation and Restoration.
The day will begin with Uncle Stephen Watson of the Wangerriburra people welcoming Coedie, and all of us, to his beautiful Country.Â
Mary Graham of the Koombumerri will speak on relationality and we hope to have Coedie join us by video to expand on his call for reoccupation.
The afternoon will be the opportunity for us to reflect on all we’ve heard. Margie Pestorius of Wage Peace will get us working all together and in yarning circles on how best we can respond to the challenges that Coedie, First Nations people and all of us are facing now.
And at the end of the day, we’ll celebrate our gathering with music and song around the campfire.
Food
Food is key to a good debate.
We'll greet you all, especially the travellers, with a light breakfast. We'll start the tea and coffee brewing and keep the urn bubbling throughout the day, with a regular feed of tasty snacks and fruit.
We’ll set out long tables under the trees and lay out a nourishing lunch – a vegan meal prepared by our enthusiastic food crew – or you can find a spot in the forest or among the gardens – and let the conversations begin!
Let us know if you have any special dietary requirements.
Proceeds
The generous response by the volunteers has allowed us to keep our operating costs close to zero.
All returns from ticket sales are put towards the fees for First Nation speakers and catering. Any surplus will be donated to a First Nation group.
Donations
We remind you that Coedie is inviting donations to keep Waddamanggu talking going. You can donate to the Wangan & Jagalingou Nagana Yarrbayn Cultural Custodians direct at https://standing-our-ground.org/donate/

Tour de Carmichael 2
Yes, the Tour de Carmichael tours again! If you are contemplating going on this year’s ride, talk to one of the many enthusiastic riders from TdeC 1, sign up, and even buy the T-shirt! Coedie’s ready for a horde of riders to tour the beautiful Wangan and Jagalingou Country and to get, direct from him, an intensive and personal account of the W&J struggle, Waddamanggu and Reoccupation.
