Carpentry for Artists - Simple picture framing

Do you want to be able to frame artworks, but don’t know how? This half-day workshop shows you how to work with timber framing profiles and the appropriate tools to make your own floating and conventional picture frames.
This 3 hour course is designed specifically for beginners, with no previous experience with tools or in workshops. It is a confidence building introduction to simple carpentry skills that is focussed on getting artists skilled up to make their own simple picture frames at home. Please note: we don’t teach glass or mat cutting in this course, but we can help you find the right people to help you with these
It covers the fundamentals of tool use and workshop techniques, including:
- Confidence in your ability to use the following tools correctly and safely – hand and power saws, drill drivers, staple guns and measuring equipment.
- Learning to measure and cut accuratelyÂ
- Practice simple joinery using glue, V nails and clamps
- Familiarise yourself with the workshop environment, practices and health and safetyÂ
This course is about applied learning: bring a small artwork (maximum size 40cm x 40cm) to the course and we’ll take you through making a frame for it.
What you bring: Yourself and a small artwork. All tools and materials are included in the registration.Â
What to wear: suitable clothing for the workshop, and sturdy closed shoes. We provide safety glasses and ear protection.

At WOTT we keep our classes small to optimise your learning experience. Any cancellations or transfers, therefore, have an effect on our ability to deliver these classes (and may even result in the cancellation of the course). Please consider your dates carefully prior to booking.
Our cancellation and refund/transfer policy is as follows:
- cancellation up to 7 days prior to the course: full refund or transfer to a new course date.
- cancellation up to 3 days prior to the course: 50% refund/no transfer. You will then be required to rebook into the preferred course.
- cancellation less than 24h prior to the course: no refund or transfer available.Â
