Sally's story...
Kia ora koutou,
Personal identity, identity politics, human identity. All of these seem urgent central issues as we travel through these strange times on planet Earth.
My story is an ongoing discovery of who I am, where I came from and where I’m headed and intertwined with discovering through personal tragedy a way forward that enriches and sustains me. I was born in 1966 to a single mother, adopted into a loving family who withheld this knowledge from me until its accidental discovery when I was 22.
Slowly over the years I have gained small pieces of the puzzle that form my identity.
In 2014 my oldest son died. Suddenly I was confronted with a situation that challenged every part of my identity as I sought ways to survive, find meaning and honour my child. Through that torrid, sacred journey I realized that embracing my identity as a human being finding a way forward from profound loss meant delving deeply into issues of personal, cultural and social identity. What that has uncovered continues to amaze me and expand my perspective on what being human really means.
