Description

WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF THE AWLQ C.A.T. PROGRAM?

  • To reduce the numbers of cats wandering the streets and being impounded and surrendered to shelters by providing free desexing and microchipping to residents of Ipswich.

  • To increase community involvement in more effective and ethical ways to manage stray cats, rather than trapping them and bringing them to the pound, i.e. helping to find owners or carers of wandering cats, returning lost cats home, booking stray, unowned cats in for desexing and taking ownership if possible, letting locals know where help is available if they are struggling with too many cats, or the costs of desexing.

  • Due to limited resources, this offer is currently only available for residents of Ipswich.

  • Terms & Conditions

Terms and Conditions I am over the age of 18 years and am the owner or have the authority to present this cat for desexing under the AWLQ CAT Program. I hereby authorize AWLQ to perform all procedures as recorded on this form. I understand that during the performance of the procedures, unseen conditions may be revealed that necessitate an extension of the procedure. Therefore, I hereby consent to and authorise the performance of such procedures as necessary and desirable in the exercise of the veterinarian's professional judgement. I understand that these procedures may be performed by (and/or under the supervision of) any qualified member of our staff. I understand that if my cat is found to be pregnant at the time of surgery, the pregnancy will be humanely terminated as part of the desexing procedure. I acknowledge this and provide my consent for the procedure to proceed. I understand that this desexing procedure is provided free of charge through the AWLQ CAT Program. I acknowledge that any additional treatments, medications or procedures required outside of the standard desexing surgery may incur costs. We will attempt to notify you if other procedures are required. I am aware that my pet is scheduled for a procedure that requires anaesthesia and/or sedation. I understand that although all reasonable precautions and due care will be taken, there is always a potential risk with anaesthesia/sedation and surgical procedures, including death. I accept these risks and authorise AWLQ to perform such treatment as deemed necessary. I understand that AWLQ takes reasonable precautions to prevent disease transmission while my pet is at the clinic. I understand that if my pet is affected by contagious disease while at the clinic and my pet does not have a current vaccination history, I am responsible for the costs of treatment. I will ensure that I am able to respond to the phone number provided throughout my cat’s stay at the clinic. By proceeding with this booking I confirm that any questions I have, have been answered to my satisfaction and I consent for the treatments/procedures to go ahead.

  • Fasting

Your pet must not have had anything to eat after 8:00pm the night before the procedure. This is especially important to avoid complications. Your cat MUST weigh 1kg to be desexed. If your cat is under 4 months old, they may have a small meal early in the morning on the day of surgery. Please let our staff know if your pet has eaten.

  • On the day

Please arrive at your allocated booking time with your cat in a safe, sturdy carrier. Intake will be faster if the consent & microchip forms are filled out prior. If you are unable to print at home, we will have spares at the clinic on the day. It is important that you read and follow the fasting requirements & post operative care prior to surgery. It is important that you are available to collect your pet at any time during the day, please ensure your phone is on loud & provide a secondary contact for collection if necessary. The latest collection is 2pm - we cannot accommodate for a later discharge time. A $5 post-surgery safety collar is highly recommended and available to purchase on the day. These help to avoid unexpected post surgery complications & costs.

  • After Surgery

VERY IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ You are responsible for your cat’s care after surgery. If your cat damages their wound (licking, pulling stitches, going outside too soon), this can cause complications and may require further surgery. We will provide an AWLQ consult recheck (during weekdays only) at no cost if complications occur. Following the care instructions below will greatly reduce the risk of complications. General Instructions Keep your pet as quiet and secure (indoors) as possible following surgery. Provide a safe, warm, and comfortable place for them to rest. Keep your cat separated from children and from other pets. Prevent running, jumping or rough play Your cat MUST NOT lick, chew or pull at the surgery site. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND your cat wears an Elizabethan collar (cone) for at least 10 days after surgery. Licking can: Open the wound Cause infection Lead to the need for further surgery Elizabethan collars can be purchased for $5 when collecting your cat. Your pet may or may not feel like eating or drinking following surgery. Depending on your pet’s recovery, food and water may be offered in SMALL amounts. Our patients receive a pain relief injection that lasts up to 3 hours, at the time of surgery. If you feel your pet is showing signs of discomfort or if you have concerns, call the on-call nurse on 0490 502 851. There is a TATTOO in the left ear to indicate your pet has been desexed. There may be excess ink present, which will crumble away in a day or so, leaving behind a dotted tattoo of a circle with a line through it. Observe the wound for any excessive redness, swelling, or discharge. Absorbable sutures have been used that will dissolve. DO NOT allow any excessive licking, pulling or chewing of the wound. Observe your pet’s toileting. They should pass a motion within 24-48 hours of going home. Restrict exercise as much as possible for at least 7 days (males) and 10 days (females) where possible. Patients should be kept quiet and NOT allowed to RUN, JUMP or PARTICIPATE IN STRENUOUS ACTIVITY. DO NOT wash your cat or let your cat get wet for at least 10 days. MONITOR your pet closely. If they display any of the following signs, contact 0490 502 851 (CAT Coordinator during program hours, on-call nurse outside of program hours), as soon as possible: vomiting, lethargy, not eating or any unusual changes in behaviour. If you have ANY concerns following your pet’s procedure, please contact the C.A.T Desex Day on-call nurse Ph: 0490 502 851. Note: vets are on-site until 2pm on CAT desex days if you require your cat to be assessed. AWLQ Community Veterinary Clinic 42 Tiger St West Ipswich Ph: 07 3812 7533.

  • Cancellations & No shows

If you can't attend on Saturday, please let us know ASAP so we can attempt to fill your appointment. If you do not let us know, you will be marked as a "no-show" and availability to rebook will be limited. Please note that short-notice cancellations (for example, within 2 days of your appointment) are difficult to fill and take away opportunities from other clients who may genuinely need the service. These cancellations also have a significant impact on our ability to provide support to the community. If you cancel at short notice more than once, your opportunity to rebook future appointments may be limited.
