Description

Get Lit! Programs Presents: Catalyst Community Writing Poetry Workshop

A Writers in the Community Project

This Winter, the MFA at EWU is continuing its free bi-weekly writing workshops for the Spokane community. Hosted by MFA candidates in the Creative Writing program, this workshop will meet every other week covering topics in a single genre. This workshop will be exclusively for prose. For our poetry workshop, sign up here. Participants must attend all five sessions in the genre they have registered for, but are welcome to join both workshops.

This prose workshop is open to all levels and methods of writing, whether you’re a seasoned veteran or have always wanted to try but don’t know where to start. Participants are expected to commit to a full sequence (5 sessions) in their registered workshop genre. The workshop aims to create an inclusive and productive environment for all.

What We Do in Workshop:

● Generate Work: Using short readings assigned by the instructors, we will focus on specific craft techniques in an effort to understand what makes writing compelling. Generative prompts or revision exercises may be offered to call attention to certain elements in our own work.

● Share Work: Each member of the workshop will submit work for class discussion. The length, frequency, and schedule of distribution for these manuscripts will be decided during the first week of the workshop.

● Critique Work: This is the most important aspect of a successful workshop. Without exception, the material presented to the class should be considered in-progress, and participants should be prepared to offer detailed, thoughtful analysis of their classmates' manuscript. The weekly agenda will vary depending on the workshop genre. Genre-specific syllabus will be available upon request and will be passed out during the first week of class. Participants must attend all five session. This commitment ensures each member of the workshop receives equal attention to their manuscript. Capacity is limited; attending each class is part of respecting the other participants and those in our waitlist.

When and Where and Other Logistics:

● This workshop will run every other Wednesday from 6pm-8pm. The workshop will begin on January 14th, and will meet again on January 28th, February 11th, February 25th, and March 11th. Please do not claim a ticket unless you are available for all five dates.

● The workshop will be held at the Catalyst Building, Room 309. The Catalyst Building is located at 601 E. Riverside Ave, Spokane, WA.

● Parking is free on Sprague Ave and surrounding side streets. Parking in the Catalyst lot requires payment.

● Registration via Humanitix: one ticket counts for the 5 session prose course.
