Catch the King Training Workshop
Event description
Join Wetlands Watch at the Elizabeth River Project's Ryan Resilience Lab from 6pm-7:30pm on Thursday, September 19th for a Catch the King training workshop! Participants will learn all about the history, research, results, and monitoring goals of the annual king tide flood data collection event that broke a Guinness World Record in 2017, and will leave fully prepared to participate in the 2024 Catch the King event on October 17th-20th.
We will also be joined by partners at Old Dominion University to share information about opportunities to volunteer for Measure the Muck, a community science water quality monitoring program that samples flood waters for nutrient loads during Catch the King tide events.
The workshop will include presentations on how to collect flood data for both programs safely during the highest tides of the year (the "king" tides), the various resources available to guide volunteers while mapping in the field, and (weather permitting) will include a data collection demo where all participants will have a chance to practice dropping GPS data points with the Sea Level Rise app and shadow a demonstration of Measure the Muck water sampling kits.
Please bring a water bottle and your phone with the Sea Level Rise app downloaded!
Arrive early at 5:15pm for a tour of the Elizabeth River Project's Ryan Resilience Lab.
