Event description

2 Day Drawing Workshop

About the Workshop

This workshop is designed to include everyone: whether you already have some drawing experience, wish to improve your skills, or simply love the act of drawing. Catherine’s drawing-focused class concentrates on traditional drawing materials such as pencils, graphite, and charcoal, as well as introducing other modern materials like liquid charcoal. Tinted charcoal and tinted graphite are also explored, while inks are reserved for an introduction on Day 2.

What to Expect

Day One

·      Begin the day by creating a tonal drawing from a simple still life setup. Catherine will arrange multiple setups to ensure everyone can work from observation.

·      The morning focuses on fundamentals: tone, perspective, and drawing challenging forms (including ellipses).

·      In the afternoon, you’ll apply these skills to a more complex subject—often working from a reference photograph projected for the group. Expect lively scenes such as people at a market or in a café, which offer interesting shapes and perspectives. Catherine will demonstrate how to break down seemingly complex subjects into manageable shapes and tones, making the impossible possible and helping everyone achieve fantastic results.

Day Two

·      Day two opens up the full toolbox of drawing equipment, introducing dramatic landscapes using a variety of materials: tinted charcoal, tinted graphite, liquid charcoal, pencils, and more.

·      The focus will be on organic subjects—expansive landscapes, majestic mountains, or studies of trees. Catherine will guide you through the process, encouraging expressive mark-making and tonal exploration.

·      Pen and ink drawing will be introduced, providing hands-on experience in drawing with ink for dynamic and striking results.
