So is George Catsi really who he says he is?
Academic, memoirist, satirist, artist, educator, community activist, storyteller, placemaker, list-maker…
AWGIE winner George Catsi is a multipotentialite (he does lots of things and struggled to find a word that was better than slashy, and recently found this one - like a good shoe- it fits)
But he started as a nurse.
In gathering bio-medical histories, George discovered the profound impact of genuine inquiry. He went on to create a TV network, RPAtv plus POWtv, that was shortlisted for NSW Premier’s Award. He was co-owner and producer of Flickerfest Short Film Festival (1997 – 2001) AWGIE nominated 2018 and 2019 AWGIE winner for educational documentaries.
As the teller of his own stories, George continues to revisit how belief curates world view. A Greek boy growing up under the sway of evangelical Baptists, this formed the basis of his satirical comedy ‘I Want to Be Slim’ – the National winner of the Kit Denton Fellowship for courage and excellence in performance writing.
As a comic/cabaret artist George is co-founder and performer in Gods Cowboys a comedic trio who created the genre, Cowbaret. His character creation from Gods Cowboys, the Rev Slim Limits and the evangelical battle of good V evil became the subject of his PhD - exploring persuasive performance and charisma. As a graduate of the Uni of Melbourne’s Asialink Leadership Program, a lecturer at UTS in Design Thinking, Animation, Performance and Communications, George was a speaker at The Perceptions of Evil and Human Wickedness Conference in Salzburg and has keynoted on topics as diverse as Satire, National Identity and Creativity.
As the President of The Petersham Bowling Club, an NSW Green Globe finalist, George led the push that transformed a dying inner-city club by removing poker machines and creating a thriving art, music and community hub.
A believer that the power of speaking facilitates people to take ideas and themselves to better places, George has created and led workshops with Mandy Nolan, creating Authentic You Masterclasses to help people become more powerful, authentic speakers.
