Celebrating 10 Years of International Day of the Girl

Future Women and Plan International Australia invite you to a very special breakfast event to celebrate 10 Years of International Day of the Girl. 

Every year on October 11, the world is called to recognise the unique challenges that girls face globally and their enormous potential to bring about change. The day was born from Plan International’s campaign to see girls’ rights on the global agenda.

We invite you to a special breakfast event, celebrating the power of girls and young women to drive momentous change in the world and the key moments over the last decade where girls have changed Australia - and the world.

Your breakfast hosts are Jamila Rizvi and Clare Bowditch, from the popular Melbourne event series Tea with Jam and Clare. They will be joined by an inspiring panel of guests to share the moments that shaped them as girls, what made them into the women they are today and the next generation of girls who inspire them now.

HOSTS

Jamila Rizvi is a sought after speaker, best-selling author, podcast presenter, gender equality advocate and a Plan International Australia Ambassador. Clare Bowditch is a best-selling musician, Logie Nominated actor, and author. Together they founded the popular event series Tea with Jam and Clare. 

SPEAKERS 

Darcy Vescio played in the inaugural AFLW season with the Carlton Blues as a marquee signing, making their debut in the historic first ever AFLW game between Carlton and Collingwood. Vescio is a two-time AFLW Leading Goalkicker, two-time All-Australian and won Carlton’s Best & Fairest in 2021. Vescio’s excellence on-field also extends into their off-field life. As an openly non-binary athlete, they  understand they have a unique platform as a marquee player with Carlton to be a trailblazer across gender diversity and equality and LGBT+ discussions. Vescio is also passionate about promoting the importance of multiculturalism. 

April Hélène-Horton is a writer, public speaker, actor and model; you might know her as The Bodzilla.April is all about fat joy - a passionate advocate for intersectional experiences, she’s a noted MC and keynote speaker who gives people the confidence to take up the space they deserve. Her sense of fun translates through to her fashion where she is a literal rainbow of fabulous fashion. In 2021, she led the way as Australia’s first truly plus size models to appear in a bikini on a billboard and was part of a national three-part TV series asking what Australia really thinks about disability, old people and obesity.She champions racial equity, LGBTQ inclusion, sex positivity and fat liberation. A full-time communications gig keeps her busy; in the past she’s had a finger in a number of pies across advertising, social media and production of music videos, commercial shoots and film. In 2022, her mission is to continue bringing conversations about authentic diversity, inclusion and privilege to everyday life. 

Elly Desmarchelier is a proud disabled, queer woman and national disability rights campaigner. Most recently she was proud to be the National Spokesperson for the Defend Our NDIS campaign. Defend Our NDIS brought together thousands of people with disability, their families, disability support workers and community supporters to ensure the NDIS was high on the election agenda.Elly’s advocacy sees her meet with the country’s leaders (recently attending the Prime Minister’s Jobs and Skills Summit), engage with national media, host town hall meetings and most importantly meet with thousands of people with disability who have shared their stories with her. Her writing has been featured in national publications and has appeared on national TV, including The Project, ABC’s Afternoon Briefing and 7:30. Elly’s determined to create change for the 1 in 5 Australians with disability and believes that’s only possible if people with disability have a seat at the table where decisions and discussions are had that impact our lives. When she’s not smashing the patriarchy, you’ll find Elly on Twitter (@EDesmarchelier), watching too many American political news shows, or on the couch at home with her partner, Chantelle, and their two rambunctious dogs.

Senator Sarah Hanson-Young is a passionate environmentalist, community campaigner, feminist and mum who was the youngest woman elected to federal parliament at the age of 25. Over her 15 years in Parliament, Sarah has been a champion for gender equality, ensuring female voices are at the centre of discussions around the environment, human rights and the fair treatment of refugees and asylum seekers. She won a landmark defamation case against a former male Senator, calling out harassment and sending a strong message that women deserve to be safe and respected in all workplaces. A portion of the proceeds from this case were donated to Plan International to support the critical work they do to support women and girls.  Social change can only happen when girls across the world are included, whether it is fighting for basic human rights or leading climate change action. Sarah is excited to be celebrating 10 years of the International Day of the Girl amongst trailblazers of gender equality across different areas of Australian society, from sport to environment and the arts.

Tickets: $110 each or $990 for a table of 10. Includes breakfast and tea/coffee. Cost includes GST and excludes booking fee. 

10% of every ticket sold will be donated to Plan International Australia.
