Event description
EVENT NOW TO TAKE PLACE AT GODFREY DANIELS, NOT THE ICEHOUSE
Godfrey Daniels is proud to mark a rare and meaningful convergence: the 50th anniversary of Guy Clark’s landmark debut album Old No. 1, and the beginning of our own 50th anniversary season.
Grammy-winner, Nashville Songwriter Hall of Fame member, and Academy of Country Music Poet’s Award honoree, Guy Clark was a towering figure in American songwriting. Born in Monahans, Texas, and raised in Rockport, Clark absorbed Mexican folk music and flamenco guitar before joining Houston’s vibrant folk scene, where he befriended Mickey Newbury, Townes Van Zandt, and Jerry Jeff Walker. After building guitars and honing his craft, he moved to Nashville in 1971 with his wife and creative partner, painter Susanna Talley.
Released in 1975, Old No. 1 introduced enduring songs including “Desperados Waiting for a Train,” “L.A. Freeway,” and “That Old Time Feeling.” Clark went on to release a string of acclaimed albums—Boats to Build, Dublin Blues, Cold Dog Soup, and My Favorite Picture of You (which won the 2013 Grammy for Best Folk Album). His writing was celebrated by peers and widely recorded, with hits like “Heartbroke” and “Homegrown Tomatoes” interpreted by Lyle Lovett, Ricky Skaggs, Emmylou Harris, Jerry Jeff Walker, and many others.
Clark also holds a special place in Godfrey Daniels’ story. He appeared on our stage several times, including with his son Travis in the mid-1980s and again with his close friend Townes Van Zandt in the early 1990s. His presence and artistry remain part of the fabric of our community, inspiring generations of artists who have since performed at our venue.
To honor this legacy, the Guy Clark Family Foundation is presenting Old No. 1 at 50 – Celebrating the Spirit of Guy Clark on Saturday, September 19. The evening will feature performances of songs from Old No. 1 alongside original work by:
Michael Braunfeld – acclaimed songwriter and storyteller
Meghan Cary – award-winning performer known for powerful, connective songs
Adam & Cate Monaco – folk/Americana duo with lush, melodic songwriting
Buddy Mondlock – longtime Clark collaborator and celebrated songwriter
Jack Murray – Americana roots artist with Nashville and Philadelphia ties
Rees Shad – prolific songwriter and show organizer with deep Clark connections
Frank Viele – rising Americana voice with blues-rock edge
All proceeds from the concert will benefit the Guy Clark Family Foundation, dedicated to supporting and uplifting songwriters.
As Godfrey Daniels begins its 50th season, this event celebrates not only the timeless impact of Old No. 1, but also Guy Clark’s enduring connection to our stage and the generations of artists who carry his spirit forward.
The Guy Clark Family Foundation was established in 2024 by Guy’s only grandchildren, Dylan and Ellie. The Foundation’s mission is to honor Guy’s memory and continue his love and support for songwriters. “Songwriting is not a competitive sport,” Guy often said. He opened his home and heart to songwriters from all over the world. The Guy Clark Family Foundation will do the same. We will offer songwriters who work in the spirit of Guy Clark the opportunity to learn, write, collaborate, record, perform, and share their work with a global audience while we continue to honor Guy’s legacy.

Michael is, first and foremost, a storyteller. His songs capture the everyday triumphs and struggles of ordinary people. His characters – though trapped in the particular circumstances of their own lives – appeal to a universal audience. Michael was welcomed into the Writers Night Family at The Bluebird Cafe in 2014 and was named a finalist in the Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk Competition in 2016, 2018 and 2019. From sold out listening rooms to main stages at festivals, whether solo or with his band, the Boneyard Hounds, Michael is delighting old fans and winning over new audiences at every stop.
A unique, triple-threat artist at the height of his craft, Michael Braunfeld is writing his best songs yet. And onstage, he is a commanding presence. Whether creating compelling everyman characters out of whole cloth, mining his personal history, or addressing topical issues, Michael’s performances combine a powerful guitar style with a seemingly endless supply of urgency. And he has a pretty sneaky sense of humor too.

Buddy Mondlock met Guy Clark on top of a hill at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 1986. It was a moment that changed his life. Guy liked the song he heard and started passing around tapes of the young Chicago songwriter’s songs to people he knew in Nashville. When Guy Clark gives you a tape, you listen. Soon Buddy was headed south to a publishing deal and a manager. Since then his songs have been recorded by Nancy Griffith, Joan Baez, David Wilcox, Janis Ian, Peter, Paul & Mary, Garth Brooks and a host of other artists. In 2001 he co-wrote and recorded a trio album with Art Garfunkel and Maia Sharp called “Everything Waits To Be Noticed.” Guy Clark’s album “The Dark” is bookended with songs Clark and Mondlock wrote together – “Mud” and the title song, “The Dark,” which was their first co-write.
