Event description

Supported by the RMIT Space Industry Hub, RMIT’s first piece of space heritage has been launched! A new type of electromagnetic shield designed and manufactured at RMIT was launched from the Esrange Space Centre in Sweden on Tuesday.

The experiment – called RADICALS – has the capacity to fundamentally change how astronauts and electronics are protected from harmful radiation in space.

We will hear from the Project Lead, Dr Gail Iles, an Associate Professor in Physics, as she explains the background to the experiment and talks the audience through the launch feed, together with two of her students who have been integral to the experiment and accompanied Dr Iles to the launch. The event will conclude with Q&A from the audience, canapes and networking.

Representatives from government, industry and academia are invited to attend.

The RMIT Student HIVE Rocket Team will be displaying one of their competition rockets, The Moon to Mars Trailblazer:  ELO2 will be displaying the prototype rover, the Nova Ball will be available and an earlier version of the RADICALS radiation shield will also be on display.

Numbers are limited so please RSVP now to secure your spot.
