Central Neighbourhood Walks: Moa
Event description
Discover & discuss inner city life: join a free walk and facilitated conversation led by a local resident that takes you from the hidden community sanctuary of Moa Reserve to the banks of the Ōtākaro River and all around this little-known corner of the inner city.
This neighbourhood is a diverse area that is full of potential. Discover how people live in the little residential streets, beside big box retail and manage the negative experience of busy one-way roads.
This walk is led by Scott McKerrow (Te Whānau-ā-Apanui / Ngāti Porou / Ngā Puhi). Scott and his whānau have recently moved from Tāmaki Makaurau to Ōtautahi and have been central city residents for two years. “For us, Moa Reserve is our centre, it is where we spend our family time, it is where we engage with our neighbours and it is where we relax.” A sense of community and connection is hard to achieve in a city but Scott believes Moa has a strong feeling of whanaungatanga. Scott is an architect and an urban designer who loves exploring the city with his young family.
All are welcome – whether you live or work in the area or are merely curious about inner city living in Christchurch. The walk finishes with the opportunity to continue the conversation over a coffee (our shout!)
This walk is a tour and a conversation for everyone to share experiences of living and being in inner city neighbourhoods. It is part of a programme of walks funded by Christchurch City Council’s Central City Residential Programme to generate and gather people’s perceptions and experiences of these neighbourhoods as the central city develops.
If you are feeling unwell please look after yourself and others by staying home. Please return your ticket if you have COVID-19 symptoms or if you need to be in isolation for any reason.
The walk is free and booking is required.
