Ceramic Sculpture Class: Suspended Forms 26T4

This course explores clay as a medium for creating suspended and hanging sculptural works. Inspired by movement, balance, repetition, rhythm, and the relationship between objects and the space around them, students will develop sculptural forms designed to hang, dangle, and move.

Rather than focusing on traditional pottery or functional objects, students will explore how individual ceramic components can be connected, arranged, and suspended to create dynamic sculptural compositions. Through experimentation with form, weight, scale, and repetition, students will investigate how a sculpture changes through movement and interaction with its surroundings.

The course begins with structured explorations into hanging and suspended forms before students develop their own sculptural outcomes. Simple handbuilding approaches are used as a starting point, allowing emphasis to shift towards composition, movement, balance, and the development of individual sculptural ideas.

By the end of this course, students will

• Create a hanging or suspended ceramic sculpture

• Have the option to return for a glaze workshop

This class is for

Adults and emerging makers with some clay experience. Suitable for intermediate students who want to move beyond functional pottery into experimental sculptural practice.

About the tutor

Luke is an accomplished ceramic artist and dedicated educator with a deep-rooted passion for pottery. With a Diploma of Ceramics and a Cert IV in adult education, Luke brings both expert knowledge and a strong educational background to his classes. His experience spans wheel throwing, handbuilding, and slipcasting, with work that includes both functional and sculptural ceramics.

Luke’s teaching philosophy centres on fostering creativity and skill development in a supportive environment. His approachable and patient demeanour makes learning pottery accessible and enjoyable for students of all levels.
