Ceramic Workshop with Mary Deutscher
Event description
In this workshop you will explore the three basic hand building techniques with ceramics, including, a Pinch Pot, Slab and Coil. By the end of the workshop, you will have learned about each technique by creating your own piece using each technique. Once your work is completed you will be able to take your work or alternatively you can leave it with the facilitator who will cure the piece in her kiln. It is up to the participant to coordinate with the facilitator, the collection of their work at a later date.
All materials will be supplied.
Mary Deutscher is a full time commission ceramicist working from her home studio at Mt Lofty Toowoomba Qld. Learning skills from Flying Arts tutor, Gwynn Pigott in the ‘80s, Mary has over time, developed a contemporary approach to her work. She finds commission work stimulating as she draws upon her experience to satisfy her own creativity providing that bespoke piece for the client.
Mary makes a wide variety of work using raku and midfire clays to create the perfectly glazed dinner set, the raku sculpture or that hand painted, underglazed tea pot or coffee mug.
Inspired by ceramicist Paulus Berensohn, Mary had the honour of winning the prestigious South Australian Craft Pottery Award 2022 presenting a primitive recycled clay and local earth pinched pot. Mary believes having an opened mind and using experimental learning is the way forward as a ceramicist.
These workshops have been made available to the community with the assistance of the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) which is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Toowoomba Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
