Ceramics in Shepparton; Local Makers, Local Stories
Description
Shepparton has long been recognised as one of regional Victoria's ceramic centres, and now, as handmade craft experiences a global resurgence, it's a great time to explore the possibilities of working with clay.
Join local ceramicists Aleisa Miksad, Kaye Poulton and Megan Walker hosted at Nocturne Studios for an insightful panel conversation exploring the realities of building a ceramics practice and business. Together, they'll share how they've developed their own distinctive creative voices, accessed opportunities, navigated the business side of making and sustained their practice in regional Victoria.
From exhibitions and commissions to markets, teaching and studio practice, this gathering offers a rare opportunity to hear experiences and reflections from makers at different stages of their journeys. There'll also be time for questions, discussion and connection with fellow creatives.
Whether you're an established ceramicist, emerging maker or simply curious about the role clay continues to play in Shepparton's creative identity, come along to be inspired, informed and connected.

Kaye Poulton
Kaye Poulton has been making ceramics for over 40 years. She is widely known for her wheel thrown crafted forms, on glaze painting and stony surfaces. Kaye lives on Yorta Yorta land, near Mooroopna, Victoria where her work is influenced by the surrounding land and vegetation. Her ongoing engagement with clay has allowed for much experimentation and creativity and she enjoys the privilege of sharing her skills by teaching within her community. Aleisa Miksad
Aleisa Miksad (b. 1980) is an Australian ceramicist based in Shepparton, Victoria. She creates and fires her ceramics at her home studio in Kialla. She has presented work at the Sydney Contemporary Art Fair and the Aotearoa Art Fair. She was a top five finalist in the MA Financial Art prize 2024, Ravenswood Australian Women's Art Prize (2024) and the Lake Prize (2022). She has been invited to show at the Shepparton Art Museum in 2023 and 2026.. She is represented by Curatorial+Co in Sydney. Instagram - @aleisamiksad
Megan Walker
Megan’s interest in ceramics began in the early 1980’s when she attended several introductory ceramic courses at Potters Cottage in Warrandyte. A move to the country and an alternative life intervened and she only returned to clay after retiring in 2009. She attended workshops at SAM with ceramic artist Angie Russi and then commenced and continues to attend regular classes with local ceramic artist Kaye Poulton. Megan has developed an interest in the history of ceramics and appreciates the different forms and styles that developed in various cultures. She has travelled to both Japan and Korea to attend and participate in workshops. She was able to learn about traditional and contemporary methods of hand building, throwing, firing and decoration used in these cultures Her practice focuses mainly on wheel throwing but she also hand-builds both domestic and some sculptural forms. She is interested in the natural environment and in particular how different clays can be used to reflect the colours and textures of the Australian environment. She enjoys researching new glazes and mixes her own from raw materials. She has extended her knowledge through attending specialist glaze workshops. Megan exhibits in the SAM Open exhibitions and sells at Farmers Markets in the local region and in the SAM Shop. Instagram - @megancwalker5
