A morning that could change how you see family harm.

Every year, our community comes together for White Ribbon. This year, we're creating something special: a room full of people who care about preventing family violence, a beautiful grazing breakfast, meaningful connections and the opportunity to hear from a woman whose story and wisdom can change the way we see the world.

Our special guest is Jude Simpson MNZM.

Jude brings decades of experience in family violence prevention, advocacy and training, alongside the perspective and understanding that come from lived experience. She spent a decade as a family violence advocate, was the lead spokesperson for the national It's not OK campaign, and went on to spend 11 years as a family harm trainer and senior advisor at the Royal New Zealand Police College.

Jude designed the Hearts and Minds family harm training delivered to every New Zealand Police recruit, helping ensure that victims remain at the centre of responses to family harm and that the human being behind every situation is never forgotten.

Awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2018 for her services to the prevention of family violence, Jude is also the author of Lost and Found: A Woman's Living Proof.

Jude brings warmth, honesty and a light-hearted sense of humour to even the toughest conversations. But beneath the laughter is a depth of understanding that statistics and training alone cannot offer: a deeply human perspective on family harm, resilience and the realities people face.

Jude's story will change you.

Join us to listen, reflect, connect and consider what it means to build a future where relationships are safe, respectful and free from violence.

Your morning | 8:30am–12:00pm

  • Arrive and connect: Tea, coffee and time to meet others working towards safer relationships and communities.

  • A warm welcome: Opening karakia and a welcome to the day.

  • Stand together: Leave with fresh perspectives and a renewed sense of what we can do, individually and collectively, to make a difference.

Want to go deeper? Join Jude's afternoon masterclass. Don't miss it.

12:45pm–3:45pm

$50 for the full day, including breakfast and afternoon tea

For CFVC Reference Group members and people working alongside whānau every day, the afternoon offers an opportunity to move beyond listening and explore how we put learning into practice.

Jude's practical, interactive masterclass will explore:

  • Behaviour is a narrative: What might people be communicating through behaviour they cannot put into words?

  • Desire versus capability: Why wanting to leave a harmful situation is not always the same as being able to.

  • Understanding additional barriers: How people from minority communities may experience further challenges when facing family harm, and how we can recognise and examine our own biases.

  • Managing our expectations: How to remain connected and constructive when progress does not unfold as we hoped.

  • Looking after yourself: Develop a personal wellbeing plan you can take back into your working life.

Expect practical activities, thoughtful reflection and opportunities to consider how these insights can strengthen your practice.

Afternoon tea is provided. Lunch is not included. Please bring a light lunch to enjoy in the Youth Hub atrium or visit a nearby café.

This event is an opportunity to strengthen those connections, learn from one another and reaffirm our shared commitment to safer relationships for everyone, with rangatahi and future generations in mind.

We are grateful to our event supporters: Platters 'R' Us, Coffee Embassy, Copenhagen Bakery and The French Bakery.

    Jude Simpson

Meet Jude Simpson MNZM Jude Simpson brings a rare depth of wisdom, understanding and humanity to the prevention of family violence. Her perspective is shaped by decades of professional experience and her own lived experience, giving her a profound understanding of the realities of family harm and the people whose lives it touches. For more than two decades, Jude has worked to change how New Zealand understands and responds to family violence. She spent a decade as a family violence advocate and was the lead spokesperson for the national It’s not OK campaign. For 11 years, Jude served as a family harm trainer and senior advisor at the Royal New Zealand Police College, where she designed the Hearts and Minds training delivered to every New Zealand Police recruit. Her work has championed the importance of putting victims at the centre of responses to family harm, recognising the person behind the circumstances, and never losing the human touch. Awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) in 2018 for her services to the prevention of family violence, Jude is also the author of Lost and Found: A Woman’s Living Proof. But beyond the roles, the recognition and the years of experience is a woman whose story offers a deeper understanding of family harm, resilience and the human experiences that statistics and professional training alone cannot fully convey. Jude’s story will change you. Her honesty, wisdom and understanding invite us to see things differently, challenge our assumptions and reflect on how we respond to family harm, both professionally and personally. Join us at the CFVC White Ribbon Breakfast to hear Jude Simpson and be part of a conversation that can change how we understand, respond to and prevent family violence.
