Chapel of Sound
Description
Erskine Chapel in Island Bay is considered one of the finest examples of French-Gothic architecture in NZ. Built in 1929 and restored in the 1990s, it features an Italian marble interior, soaring, vaulted ceilings and world-renown acoustics. For the first time since Erskine was built, it will be reeling with the sound of the underground on July 25. A full audio visual experience in an incredible, category one historical building is something not to be missed. The chapel has housed weddings, choirs, events and fashion shows, but has it housed a proper dance party? The answer is; not until now. Expect projection mapped elements, lighting to knock you sideways, sound that soars, a fully licensed bar, a dancefloor under the arches and a collection of some of Aotearoa’s favourite selectors who will have the chapel rocking.
First up; the formidable powerhouse duo, COMMUNICATE. Known for sets that incorporate decades of sound, Cyril Orson and Heylady have been punishing dance floors across the country since they teamed up almost 4 years ago. This year they launched their music label XCOMMUNICATE, and with upcoming releases scheduled and time spent in the studio writing, these two are a force to be reckoned with.
Jen Kyle grew up on a steady diet of killer music in Scotland. Exposed to the gritty, raw nightlife Glasgow had to offer, she developed a taste for quality sound across genres. You’re just as likely to hear acid lines as you are dope disco, organized and honed into a melting pot of goodness by a critically good ear.
DJ Coda is Aotearoa’s godfather of techno. A tireless techno soldier since the beginning of the 90s, DJ Coda is responsible for most of the original Detroit techno legends adventuring into New Zealand. He has run warehouse parties, the S-ence club nights, festivals and is one of the trustees of Te Whanganui-a-Tara’s beloved Radio Active - as well as hosting The Floor on Thursday nights. A DJ Coda set is one not to be missed.
Takas has been rolling dancefloors across Aotearoa with leftfield sound since the early 2000s. He has been a resident at more NZ institutions than you’ve had hot dinners, he’s played with legions of insanely good internationals, he has rocked stages at some of our most well known festivals and he’s a staple when it comes to getting a party started right. With all this and more, we recommend arriving early. The goodness starts when the doors open and we’d hate for you to miss any of the show. Tickets are extremely limited, we suggest grabbing yours before they are gone.
IMPORTANT INFO: Our event is a safe space for all. If you or someone you know is feeling unsafe or harassed, please approach one of the bar staff or security.
