    Event description

Algae may well be the dawn of a new era for sustainability

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have set the stage for a transformative shift towards a more sustainable and inclusive future. SDG 9, focusing on industry innovation and infrastructure, and SDG 12, emphasizing responsible consumption and production, both recognize the importance of circular economy principles. However, the true magnitude of the potential industry realignment remains largely unrecognized.

In this seminar, we will explore the untapped possibilities that arise when decarbonization and industrial-scale algae-based processing of raw materials are integrated into the circular (bio)economy framework. Central to this discussion will be the groundbreaking work of C3 and our partners who are developing a diverse range of algae-based products.

By leveraging the power of algae, C3 has paved the way for businesses to transition seamlessly from fossil-based to algae-based feedstock. This paradigm shift offers unprecedented opportunities for sustainable production and responsible consumption, aligning with the principles of SDG 9 and SDG 12.

About the Presenter: Peter Ralph, Climate Change Cluster (C3)

Peter Ralph is an expert in photosynthesis and pigments biosynthesis in algae. Peter has over 20 years of experience in aquatic photosynthesis research, making significant advances in the understanding of photosynthesis and biomass production in algae. In 2013, he created a new research program that applies his knowledge in photobiology, biophysics and cellular biochemistry to develop sustainable raw algae materials to grow the emerging algal biotechnology sector in Australia. He works with a wide range of start-ups, SMEs, not-for-profits, NGOs and multi-nations to deliver a sustainable circular bioeconomy.

This event aligns with the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs):
