Microplastics: Understanding a Hidden Environmental Challenge

Microplastics have become one of the most pervasive forms of environmental pollution. Small plastic particles are now found in oceans, rivers, soil, food systems and even the air we breathe. While public attention often focuses on visible plastic waste, microplastics represent a less visible but potentially significant challenge for environmental sustainability, human health and the resilience of natural systems.

In this interactive session, Professor Martina Linnenluecke, Director of the Centre for Climate Risk and Resilience at UTS, will discuss emerging research on microplastic pollution and the findings of a recent UTS-led White Paper developed in collaboration with industry, government and community stakeholders.

The session will explore why microplastics matter, the challenges of governing a complex environmental issue and how research, innovation and collective action can contribute to progress towards several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those relating to responsible consumption and production, climate action and life below water.

Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in discussion and ask questions about one of the defining environmental challenges of our time.

This event is part of UTS Global Goals Month 2026. Explore more of the Global Goals Month program here.
