In this NESA ACCREDITED face-to-face hands-on workshop participants will learn how to perform a variety of experiments and investigations for the HSC Chemistry syllabus:

    1. NOx equilibrium
    2. Iron thiocyanate equilibrium
    3. Golden Rain
    4. Silver Exception
    5. Gravimetric Analysis
    6. Enthalpy of neutralisation
    7. Purity of aspirin
    8. Do it yourself Buffer
    9. Hydrocarbon Properties
    10. Enthalpy of combustion
    11. Identifying Cations
    12. Identifying Anions
    13. Identifying Organic Functional Groups

    They will also:

    • Assess the risk for each activity and identify the appropriate safety measures
    • Experience first-hand how to use the equipment effectively
    • Acquire appropriate and varied pedagogies for experimental Physics
    • Explore the use of simulations that add value to teaching and learning experiments
    • Unpack ‘Working Scientifically’ skills
    • Identify varied opportunities for ‘Depth Studies’

        Completing Experiments for HSC Chemistry Teachers will contribute 5 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area of Delivery and Assessment of NSW Curriculum/EYLF addressing Standard Descriptor 2.1.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

        Workshop Delivered by Dr Col Harrison

        Col began teaching in Sydney's golden west in 1988. Since then he has worked in the public and private sector as well as holding several roles in teacher training and development with Peer Support Australia and Beaconhouse in the United Arab Emirates. He has HSC marking experience in Biology and Chemistry and has a YouTube channel to support flipped learning in the classroom. Col is the current Head of Science and Leader of Professional Learning at St Philip's Christian College, Port Stephens.
