Take a walking tour of Sydney's oldest Chinatown with your intrepid guide, King Fong and learn about the fascinating history and evolution of the Haymarket area. 

Starting outside the gates of the Chinese Garden of Friendship in Darling Harbour, moving through Chinatown and into Haymarket, King will shine a light on the people and places of historic importance to Sydney's Chinese Australian community.

Depending on time you may hear stories about: 

  • Police raids on gambling dens
  • Margaret Fulton's introduction to Chinese cuisine
  • The role of the Clans during the era of the White Australia Policy
  • The importance of chopsticks to newlyweds
  • Pigeon-assisted lotteries 
  • The money-saving code used to send encrypted telegrams to China 
  • The colonial origins of Dixon Street. 

Tickets are free and bookings are essential, the tour is limited to 20 participants

This tour is part of The Tea Exchange exhibition's public programming. A collaboration between The Chinese Garden of Friendship and MOCA, The Tea Exchange explores the history and cultural significance of tea in Australia.
