CHONZU x GOOSEBALL - LIVE DUO SHOW
Event description
“Hello”
Master of blips, maven of micro-pop, laptop shoegaze revivalist CHONZU is an amalgam of so many traits that I love - melodic, expressive, glittery, synthetic but fundamentally human. While his music is singular in so many ways, I hear sonic resemblances to some absolute personal faves - when I first heard his music I was reminded of Canadian producer I Am Robot And Proud, but I also find myself thinking to Helios, early Nathan Fake, Lali Puna, Yasuaki Shimizu.
When we started chatting about doing a show I asked if there was anyone he’d be keen to add to the bill. As it turns out, he’s been working on some material with local ambient composer, producer and vocalist GOOSEBALL - they’ll be previewing some of their new music on the night, alongside some of their own solo work. I’m so taken with the recordings I’ve been listening to - reflective melodies, gorgeous hazy synth washes, lush reverbed autotune… it’s the good stuff, is what I’m saying.
The lights will be low. They’re bringing an extra fog machine and a projector, so we’re talking late night movie vibes in a beautiful dive bar in Redfern.
I’m super, super excited about this night. It’s going to be a beautiful experience.
If you ever went to or heard about my gig series THE GATE @ PABLO’S - a series of ambient gigs in a coffee shop in Epping back in 2012 - this is going to be very reminiscent of that kind of vibe. You can still find some videos on YouTube - go take a look.
