Event description

Australia's leading klezmer band makes their long anticipated Canberra debut as they tour their first album 'Ajar'. One night only, Monday 8 April @ the National Jewish Memorial Centre.

Chutney is a klezmer band with a twist. Drawing on their Eastern European and Middle Eastern Jewish heritage, they present a hot, spicy and high-energy mix of original compositions, their own modern arrangements of traditional dance tunes and quirky reinterpretations of pop classics.

Over recent years, Chutney has become a household name in Sydney's Jewish community. They have played the Sydney Opera House along with every major synagogue in Sydney, have toured the east coast of Australia, and are regarded as the country's leading klezmer band.

Their debut album 'Ajar' is a potpourri of their best 13 tracks, featuring originals and fresh arrangements of classics honed across 100+ shows over the past four years. From funked up takes on traditional dance tunes to klezmerified Britney Spears, from soulful jazz to reggae and samba, from Fiddler on the Roof (of course) to Mozart - there's something for everyone.

The album includes Israeli ballad, Kama At Yafa, featuring soul diva Sarit Michael. The song has gone viral internationally since Chutney released it in solidarity with Israel in December 2023.

Don't miss this special night of Jewish culture at its most vibrant. Wear your dancing shoes!

"Fantastic and dynamic arrangements, brilliant playing and musicianship - and that all important joie de vivre - makes them a must-see experience!" - Yaron Hallis, ARIA-winning lead singer of Monsieur Camembert
