Description

Presented by Circular Economy FNQ
Worksheet Sponsor: Eco Cleaning Services FNQ

Join us for a special screening of Ocean, followed by an in-depth community discussion on the real science that can save us, draw down 30% of the carbon in the atmosphere and in the end save not just our Great Barrier Reef but the other 5 that are projected to survive climate change and how Marine Protected Areas like Palau can restore our global ocean systems — from coral, fish dynamics & the importance of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.

This event is designed for people who want to understand the actual mechanisms highlighted in the film, and how these align with the 29 peer-reviewed papers informing Circular Economy FNQ’s own research that will be a Regenerative Tourism extra-curricular Citizen Science project.

💙 After the Film: What We’ll Explore Together

1️⃣ The GBR & Sustainable Fishing: What the Film Reveals & What Science Confirms

We unpack the hands-on ecological levers that coral scientists say matter most and that the film brings to life.

How Super Trawlers are killing the Ocean. #sustainablefishing

This is the science people rarely hear about — and it’s all in the movie.

2️⃣ The Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC)

We’ll discuss why the ACC is a global climate engine and why many researchers argue it should be included in the Ocean Treaty roadmap.

3️⃣ Ocean Treaty Mapping Workshop

With guided worksheets (sponsored by Eco Cleaning Services), participants will explore:

  • which regions should qualify as Marine Protected Areas

  • where key nurseries and coastlines are

  • The impact of Australia better enforcing the Modern Slavery Act 2018 in fishing supply chains, there is a circular innovator from Innisfail that has a solution.

This is an accessible introduction to real ocean governance and environmental science.

4️⃣ Regenerative Tourism & Blue Carbon Pathways

We show how FNQ can be influencers in:

  • GBR MPAs

  • Phytoplankton research

  • Ocean Observatories - STEEM environmental feedback loops.

📘 Workshop; With CEFNQ Blue Carbon Research Journal (Part 1)

Tonight we launch the first chapter of our ongoing Research Journal — designed for young people, homeschoolers, teachers, and emerging scientists.

This journal encourages participants to:

  • explore science questions raised in the film

  • analyse research opportunities in RRAP, Chasing Coral, and exOIS briefs

  • propose MPA locations and monitoring ideas

  • map sustainable fishing strategies

  • contribute observations, drawings, data, and questions

  • continue the conversation with future in-person events

  • participate in a Pitch to David Attenborough details on the night.

This is how we grow the next generation of environmental scientists.
