The circular economy is emerging in WA, Australia and across the world. But what does it mean in the context of textiles and clothing? For our first in-person Circular Economy Perth event for 2020 post-COVID, we're turning our focus to textiles, and how we will consume and use textiles in a future circular economy that is regenerative by intention and design.

Imagine what we could achieve with a network of passionate and engaged people actively working together in transitioning not just WA but across every state in Australia from a linear to a circular economic system? That's our intention with Circular Economy Perth, which is a State Government-funded project in 2020, via the Waste Authority's Community & Industry Engagement funding stream.

JULY'S THEME IS FASHION & TEXTILES!

Textiles and clothing are a fundamental part of everyday life and an important sector in the global economy. But the current fashion (and textiles) system is broken. By adopting new business models and designing out waste from the offset, today’s fashion industry has the potential to unlock billion dollar economic opportunities across the globe.

As usual, we'll be asking all the brilliant questions in this panel Q&A event!

What's wrong with the current linear and fast fashion model we see today?

WEAR YOUR BEST CIRCULAR FASHION TO THE EVENT!
We'll be awarding a prize for the best dressed at the event in their own circular fashion. Think best upcycled/recycled/thrifted garments, rent your outfit for the evening, borrow from a friend or wear clothes made from materials that are safe and renewable!

We'll also have some of the talented students from TAFE showcasing and selling their circular garments on the night. Prices range from $25 to $75. 100% of the profits go to the end of the year fashion event.

Lisa Piller, Design Thinker, Lecturer & Curator, South Metropolitan TAFE

Lisa Westover Piller is a lecturer in Fashion Design and Fashion Business at South Metropolitan TAFE, following a 16-year career working in fashion product design and development, and sustainable supply chain management. With a passion for holistic and conscious design and zero-waste pattern making approaches, Lisa is committed to preparing students for lasting careers as ethical, sustainable and innovative designers.

A lifelong learner, Lisa‘s passion for designing for change within a vibrant fashion industry fuels an ongoing immersion in new technologies and sustainable and circular practices. Lisa is currently completing a postgraduate research project on circular fashion practice in the Australian sector.

Alfie Germano, CEO & Managing Director, Nanollose

Mr Germano is a creative achiever who strives for the balance of art and science in product and process. He is a 30-year veteran in the global textile industry sector. Alfie obtained his Fashion Design and Textile Science Diploma from the Bentley College of Technical and Further Education in Perth, Western Australia.

After working for his family garment manufacturing company, he moved to Hong Kong where he spent 24 years in the garment industry as a leader of large-scale global product development, sourcing and retail operations. He held E/S-Vice President and Managing Director positions at GAP Inc, VF Corporation, Liz Claiborne Inc, Fila Inc and Carter’s Inc. Alfie has travelled the world extensively with postings in the USA, Japan and China. Alfie relocated his family to Perth in 2016 and is enjoying the “green-change” in Australia. He is passionate about sustainability, strategy, performance, metrics, process and product.

Eleanor Litterick, Fashion Designer, CITIZEN

Eleanor Litterick is an award-winning young designer, whose work focuses on the principles of sustainability and biotechnology. Her interest in these areas has led to experimentation with kombucha textiles, which she cultivates and harvests in her home studio. Eleanor’s recent capsule collection featured reclaimed textiles and zero waste garments, and she looks forward to launching her sustainable, non-gendered label, CITIZEN, later this year.

Claudi & Molly, Co-founders of The Fibre Economy

The Fibre Economy is a not-for-profit group aimed at facilitating the implementation of a circular fashion and textile model in Western Australia and beyond. Through recycling programs, community workshops and research initiatives, the charity provides education and information on the detrimental social and environmental impact of unwanted or discarded textile waste.

Claudi is a Curtin University graduate passionate about utilising what we already have around us. She favours up-cycling waste materials such as Australian wool blankets & creatively applying the iconic materials to contemporary, one-of-a-kind designs. Working with a philosophy adopted from traditional Japanese patchwork, Boro: to take something old or broken & give it a new, more beautiful life, is her mantra.

Molly's textile practice responds to a devoted love for the natural environment and creative solutions which she endeavours to refine, to ensure she continues to create in synergy with her surroundings. A recent Curtin University graduate, she relishes in the inherent vulnerabilities of raw materials and slow production processes, looking to natural colour, hand-made cloth, up-cycling and zero-waste design for inspiration.

Dylan Lamb, Circular Economy Ecosystem Lead, Holonic (Perth, WA)

Dylan is Co-Founder and Systemic Designer at Holonic, a systemic design, innovation & leadership consultancy accelerating the transition towards a circular economy in Australia. A civil engineer turned designer and innovator, he has international experience in the USA and is passionate about systemic design and innovation for positive social and environmental impact. He's known as that 'circular economy guy' in WA and is driven to catalyse the transition from a linear to a circular economy wherever he goes. He hosts the CE Perth meetup community and is currently working with a variety of businesses in WA driving circular and systemic design & innovation.
