Breathing new life into old timbers

What happens to a house when it’s no longer a home? When buildings are dismantled, the materials inside them—especially timber—hold stories, history, and untapped potential. Circular Timber: From Salvage to Showcase explores the creative and practical possibilities of reusing timber from houses in the NSW Reconstruction Authority Resilient Homes program, proving that what was once part of a house can have a second life in new and beautiful ways.

At the heart of this exhibition are pieces crafted by local makers using salvaged wood from two North Lismore buyback properties. These objects—functional, artistic, and deeply connected to place—demonstrate that reclaimed timber is more than just a resource; it’s part of our regional identity. With rich textures, unique grains, and a history embedded in every beam, these timbers tell a story of resilience, adaptation, and transformation.

Beyond the finished pieces, the exhibition provides a deeper look at timber reuse, combining historical context, global case studies, and insights into deconstruction versus demolition. It highlights the need for policies that support large-scale timber reuse, showcasing how we can move beyond wasteful demolition toward more thoughtful recovery of materials.

This exhibition is an invitation to rethink what’s possible. By shifting our perspective, supporting local craftsmanship, and advocating for better systems, we can ensure that valuable resources continue to serve our communities—long after the walls come down.
