    Event description

This year, the Coastal Imaging Research Network (CIRN) Boot Camp and Workshop will be held back-to-back at the Water Research Laboratory, UNSW Sydney, Australia. WRL is the modern birthplace of Coastal Engineering in Australia, providing a wide range of consulting and research services since 1959. WRL introduced Coastal Imaging to Australia as part of the Gold Coast Narrowneck Reef in ~2000. Today WRL operates cameras along over 35km of Gold Coast Beaches as well as research sites at Narrabeen-Collaroy, one of the longest routinely monitored beaches in the world.

There is a no cost to attend the bootcamps (Oct 21-22) or CIRN Workshop (Oct 23-25). See descriptions of both events below. Registration is required to attend any the events. A limited virtual option will be available for some events but does require registration. Please note that food, accommodation and transport are not provided. All attendees are expected to cover their own costs.

    • 1 CIRN Bootcamp: Oct 21-22, 2024

The boot camp (Oct 21-22) will provide both the background and hands-on experience in working with coastal imaging for new users. The specific topics of the 2 days are still being decided based on facilitator availability.

We expect 1 day to be a Bootcamp for CoastSat satellite imagery toolbox.

The second day may include options for Planet imagery analysis, UAVs, or other topics.

    • 2 CIRN Workshop: Oct 23-25, 2024

The CIRN workshop (Oct 23-25) will focus on showcasing innovative research on coastal imaging systems and coastal imaging tools utilizing remotely sensed observations. All attendees, especially students, are encouraged to present in this informal environment. Those wishing to present, please include your presentation title in your registration. There will also be planned time for discussion around CiRN activities.

    WHERE TO STAY:

There are multiple hotel options in Manly which is a short (10 min) drive to WRL. Plenty of restaurants, grocery shops, and the beach here. Parking in Manly is permitted for residents with a 2hr limit nominally between 8am-8pm for anyone else. Manly is easily accessible from the airport by train and then ferry.

There is also the Mercure Manly Warringah in Brookvale (10 min drive) that offers more affordable rooms and parking options. https://all.accor.com/hotel/B977/index.en.shtml. There are also restaurants, the major shopping centre, and a growing micro-brewery district nearby. Brookvale is easily accessible from the airport by train and then bus.

AirBnB and other short term rentals are also quite popular in the area.

There is parking available at WRL.

Note that public transport is not great in the Northern Beaches of Sydney but available. The B-line bus runs between the city and the northern beaches and drops off near the end of King St (about a 20 min walk to WRL).

    More details will follow.
