A critical art workshop series for UTS students by Make or Break

Have you ever wondered why particular news stories rise to the top of your feeds, or how headlines shape public discussion? Recent times have highlighted the dangers of misinformation and fake news. Citizen J is an art-as-activism project that invites UTS students to collaborate with artist collective Make or Break to analyse media using AI technologies and create a future news feed to explore truth, influence and subjectivity.

Join for one, two or three workshops, taking place at UTS on:

Wednesday 23 February 3-7pm

Wednesday 2 March 3-7pm (POSTPONED)

Wednesday 9 March 3-7pm

Wednesday 16 March 3-pm (NEW DATE)

Make or Break will lead three half-day workshops at UTS Central in Autumn Session 2022 that generates a live newsfeed display on campus and online. You can join all three sessions or just one, and no prior experience of art making, activism, media analysis or coding necessary. Students from any faculty, undergrad or postgrad, are welcome and encouraged to sign up!

Workshop 1 will dive deep into analysing the media landscape and the forces that shape its voice.

Workshop 2 sees us imagining the future of news and learning about automation and AI technology.

In Workshop 3 we'll test and release our future news stream.

About the artists

Make or Break is a collaboration between artists Connie Anthes and Rebecca Gallo, based in Sydney, Australia on unceded Gadigal and Darug lands. Make or Break has worked across gallery, institution, festival and community contexts to produce a range of process-based projects that are co-authored with the communities with which they intersect.
