In this time of uncertainly and physical isolation we have worked hard to connect our community in the form of a citizen science celebration #CitSciOzOnline. We have prepared a virtual event featuring talks and discussions from people who are doing incredible things in the realm of citizen science today.

With presenters including Anntonette Daily (Executive Director at the Australian Space Agency), Julia Kumari Drapkin (CEO and Founder of ISeeChange) and Matt Miles (Coordinator of the Kangaroo Island citizen science dunnart survey) as well as 'coffee chats' with the likes of Dr Geoff Garrett (ACSA Patron and former Queensland Chief Scientist and Chief Executive of CSIRO) and Adrian Turner (CEO Firefund, Minderoo Foundation), this month-long event is not to be missed.

#CitSciOnline will centre around three themes: Disaster Response, Innovation in Citizen Science and Connections and Partnerships and will also feature a half-day symposium with a central focus on Early to Mid-Career Citizen Science Researchers.

Full details on session content, speakers and more can be found by visiting our website.

We are very thankful to our sponsors Minderoo, The Theo Murphy Initiative and The University of Adelaide for making this event a possibility.

Sessions Details (all sessions are in Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time)

October 7th 1PM – 5PM – EMCR (Early Mid Career Researcher Session)
This Early-Mid Career Researcher (EMCR) 1/2 day symposium will unite citizen science-aligned researchers in Australia to interrogate and explore research and practice in citizen science across the country. Featuring keynotes, lighting talks, Q&A, interactive sessions, and networking opportunities, this conference will be the starting point for a community of practice in citizen science research; uniting interdisciplinary researchers, citizens, and others from outside of institutional settings.
While the focus of this event is on Early-Mid Career Researchers, we warmly welcome everyone to attend this event, which will feature talks from citizen scientists in addition to perspectives of researchers.

Following registration for the EMCR event you will be contacted by The Australian Academy of Science in advance of the conference so that we can find out more about you and your priorities to tailor your experience in this event and help to build a community of practice in citizen science research in Australia.

A number of grants to support attendees with caring responsibilities and those who might require accessibility support are available for registered participants.

October 14th 7PM – 8PM – Disaster Response Stream followed by the Resilience Session 8:15PM – 9PM
This theme will celebrate and explore the unique platform that citizen science provides for the collection of diverse and comparative data and how the unification of global citizens through science can improve our ability to recover from extreme events. Following on from this session, join us for an informal chat about resilience which has been trending in 2020- but what does it mean in practice?

October 21st 7PM – 8PM – Connections and Partnerships Stream followed by Coffee & Networking session 8:15PM - 9PM
Connections are at the core of citizen science, which brings together a diverse array of people to share science and creativity through collaboration. This theme will focus on powerful examples of citizen science as a way to connect and foster impact. Stick around afterwards for a virtual coffee and some citizen science networking!

October 28th 7PM-8PM – Innovation Stream followed by CitSci Soiree 8:15PM - 9PM
New approaches and technology are pushing the boundaries of the ways that citizen science can contribute to a range of social and ecological outcomes. This theme will unite cutting edge enabling technologies with citizen science approaches and highlight opportunities for new research. After the stream join the ACSA MC team for a networking session to wind down the event.
