Event description

Shifting Centre presents CIVIC: Double Bill - show two is SEKI by Poneke-based artist Sefa Tunupopo.

ARTIST BIO:

Sefa Tunupopo (he/they) is an emerging artist of Samoan descent (Vaiala, Puipa'a) who centres movement and connection and is currently based in Wainuiomata, Aotearoa. He is a graduate of the New Zealand School of Dance (2021), and is currently an independent/freelance dancer, theatre maker, and co-director of a collective of Indigenous artists called 'Shifting Centre'. Sefa's conviction in dance is synonymous with love and aspires to be able to create art with and for his intersecting communities.

SHOW SYNOPSIS:

Set in a wasteland in an alternate present, SEKI follows a man searching for machinery—hoping to build something that will help him become SEKI.

Presented as a development season, SEKI is the debut solo dance work by Te Whanganui-a-Tara based artist, Sefa Tunupopo. This early version of the work offers the first glimpse into ideas that have been slowly unfolding since 2024. SEKI is a love letter to family and a meditation on survival, care, and maintenance. SEKI asks: how do we look after what we’ve made? How do we maintain the things we hold close, our relationships, and ourselves in order to keep going?
