Event description

Shifting Centre presents CIVIC: Double Bill - show one of our Double Bill is Soon As I Get Home by 'Isope 'Akau'ola.

ARTIST BIO:

'Akau’ola is an emerging dance artist from the villages of ‘Utulau and Lotofoa in Tonga and raised in Tāmaki Makaurau. His passion for movement was ignited through Pacific dance and theatre, leading him to full-time training at Unitec. Since graduating, ‘Isope has toured both nationally and internationally with The New Zealand Dance Company and has been developing his choreographic and teaching practice. His practice is deeply rooted in storytelling, endurance, and exploring the pursuit of utopia through movement.

SHOW SYNOPSIS:

Soon As I Get Home is a solo work celebrating life, death, nostalgia and preparation. It is a continuation of ‘Isope’s research into honouring the Pacific body. Soon As I Get Home questions what a graceful death looks like. Pacific people, especially Tongans, pour immense thought and care into mourning.

Through this work ‘Isope asks - what does that process look like in a solo body? In my body?

A body still young but that has endured. A body confident yet deeply insecure. A body that knows everything and nothing. A body obsessed with nostalgia but constantly evolving.  A body that belongs to both Aotearoa and Tonga.
