Clare Waterbug BioBlitz 2025 – Discover, Explore, Record!
Event description
BioBlitzes are a snapshot study of a specific location, where scientists and the community work together to survey and record as many species as possible within a nominated timeframe.
The Waterbug BioBlitzes are a free one-day events where community groups, individuals, students and Board staff work with aquatic ecologists to collect information about the macroinvertebrates (waterbugs) and quality of a waterway.
The events include training of volunteers, to collect valuable data. Involving the community in caring for their local environment provides a fantastic platform for increasing environmental awareness.
The events start with onsite training by experienced aquatic ecologists, followed by collecting samples and conducting water quality testing at local waterways. Participants then regroup to study the samples and record data about the macroinvertebrate species they observe. Volunteers are supported by ecologists and Landscape Board staff throughout the day.
Data collected by water citizen scientists provides a clearer understanding of the health and condition of waterways and increases the ability to monitor changes over time.
