Explore what you are already doing in terms of CLAS, and what can be improved

What You Will Learn:

This training explores how CLAS standards can be applied to work with clients and families of diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. This training discusses definitions for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services practices, and discusses how the concept of "intersectionality" impacts personal and professional identities and practices. After this training you will be more aware of your cultural identities and how you can use this sensitivity to better respond to your clients' needs, including applying culturally and linguistically responsive practices.

Definitions: Culture, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, diversity, prejudice, stereotype, cultural competency, linguistic competency, cultural humility. Changing cultural/racial/ethnic demographics and the impact on the workplace, employees, and patients. Components of cultural and linguistic competence as applied to oneself and the organization (employees/patients) as a whole. Awareness and appreciation of multicultural differences in communication styles, cultural and spiritual values and work ethics.

Meet Your Presenters:

Jennifer Garrido Santos, M.A., LMFT, LICSW, MN State Approved Supervisor

Jennifer holds a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy from Argosy University and a Bachelor of Science in Child Psychology from the University of Minnesota. She is a therapist and clinical supervisor for Change Inc., providing school-based prevention, early intervention, and mental health services in urban schools.

As a Change Inc. Clinical Director, Jennifer offers and organizes mentorship, supervision, and professional development opportunities for therapists in thirty inner-city schools. She has worked in school-based mental health for the past 17+ years and has been supervising graduate and post-graduate interns for 12+ years.

Ana Lewis, M.A., LMFT, MN State Approved Supervisor

Anais a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She has been working with young children, school-aged children, teens, and adults since 2012. Ana is bilingual in English and Spanish. Ana is trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS), Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Brainspotting, and DC-05 Early Childhood Intervention. She is also trained in play therapy.

Ana is very client-centered and solution-focused and feels that the client has the answers they need to get them through their problems but can help facilitate them in getting to those solutions faster. Ana is a Minnesota Board Approved Supervisor and has worked in this capacity supporting Masters-level therapists to licensure.

Lisa Xiong, MA, LMFT, RPT

Lisa Xiong is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who is bilingual Hmong and English. She specializes in working with children, families, and female adults who have experienced trauma, depression, anxiety, challenges adjusting to life changes, multi-systemic relational issues, self esteem, and/or exploration of intersectional identity.

She is a Registered Play Therapist and also has training and experience in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). She is an advocate for social justice and equity within the field of mental health and is a MN MFT/LPCC Board Approved Supervisor. She is a systemic and relational healer that takes a strength based, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive approach.

She believes healing is self-paced and meets her clients where they are at. She also believes therapy can be fun and that a fun brain is a learning brain.
