You're invited to our Classic book club! This month's book is Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility". After many of you asked us to tackle this classic, we're finally doing it!

With the new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility releasing in October, seems like the perfect time to start on S&S.

We will read through one chapter per day starting August 28. Each day, we'll read a chapter - about 90 pages a week. In our private group chat, we'll discuss the book's themes, characters and help unpack this 215+ year old novel.

We should finish by Oct 16, the night before we attend the Australian premiere of the film.

I'd highly recommend the Penguin Classic version or the audiobook, narrated by Rosamund Pike, on Audible. Otherwise, the ebook is available on Project Gutenberg (https://www.gutenberg.org/files/161/161-h/161-h.htm) for those who would prefer that format.

A bit about Sense and Sensibility

Author: Written by Jane Austen and published in 1811

Movie adaptations: The 1995 movie adaptation with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet is often regarded as the "best". So lovely, a very cosy and comforting watch. Directed by Ang Lee, written by Emma Thompson and starring Thompson, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman.

There's also Material Girls (2006), an American teen comedy film directed by Martha Coolidge that is loosely based on the novel, and updates the setting to modern Los Angeles. And ofc, Sense and Sensibility (2026), a film directed by Georgia Oakley and written by Diana Reid.

Read if you love: The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde, Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell.

Themes: The contrast between reasonable Elinor's patience and sense of responsibility and Marianne's headstrong love of romance ("sensibility" in the language of the time), which often leads her into trouble.
