Classic Watercolour Techniques

The aim of this classic watercolour painting class is to take students on a journey to enjoy the techniques surrounding the medium. In doing so each week students will complete a simple painting of a landscape or some other topic on paper.

What will be covered in this course?

Step by step instructions about classic watercolour techniques from setting up of a palette, understanding brushes and palette knives, mixing colours for students to be able to complete a simple painting project each lesson for the duration of the course.

By the end of this course students will:

Have a good understanding of classic watercolour techniques to enable you to work on more complex projects and to have fun in the process.

THIS CLASS IS FOR:

Persons over the age of 18 years of age who have a desire to learn the basics about watercolour painting techniques.

Material and equipment require:

    • Arches rough watercolour paper 300 gsm A3
    • Good quality paint, for example Daniel Smith or Winsor Newton – colours to include sepia, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, lemon yellow, Payne’s gray, raw sienna, burnt umber, burnt sienna, cadmium red, sap green
    • Brushes; 1 x flat size 20, 1 each of round size 8, 4 and 2, liner and small fan
    • Corflute board A3 size
    • Water container or two jars
    • Palette to mix paints or flat white china plate
    • Ruler, easer, tissues, masking tape and spray bottle

    Handouts will be distributed with the tasks each lesson

    ABOUT THE TUTOR

    Dr Margaret Drever has just recently received 2nd prize for her watercolour titled “Babbling Brook” in the Coffs Harbour Showground Art Exhibition. She is teacher trained in adult learning and brings that to class in a lesson plan. Her aim is to inspire others to achieve their best through their art.

    Margaret’s journey into art started at high school and progressed through several different painting mediums over the years from porcelain, watercolours, alcohol ink and acrylic. Over the last decade she has achieved 1st, 2nd and 3rd award prizes for paintings from the local North Coast galleries. You can view some of her art on Instagram under Margaret Drever Art.

    Retiring in 2022 from the position of Academic Dean for Accounting and Business programs, she now wishes to instruct others along their artistic path.
